World Oceans Day, observed on June 8, highlights the importance of ocean conservation. The 2026 theme focused on tackling plastic pollution and protecting marine biodiversity. India’s coastal and marine ecosystems — including mangroves and coral reefs  are under pressure from climate change and overfishing.

Exam Tip: Know major International Days: Oceans Day (June 8), Environment Day (June 5), Yoga Day (June 21), Blood Donor Day (June 14), Refugee Day (June 20). For UPSC: link ocean health to India’s Blue Economy Policy 2021 and UNCLOS.

 3. India’s Annual Defence Production Reaches Rs 1.78 Lakh Crore  [Defence / Economy]

India’s defence production for FY 2025-26 reached Rs 1.78 lakh crore, up from Rs 84,643 crore in FY 2020-21 and just Rs 43,746 crore in FY 2013-14. This growth reflects the success of ‘Make in India’ in defence, indigenous procurement policies, and iDEX.

Exam Tip: Know the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP 2020), positive indigenisation lists, iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence), DRDO’s role, and DPSUs (GRSE, HAL, BEL etc.). India’s defence export target of Rs 50,000 crore by 2028-29 is a key policy point for UPSC and NDA.

The Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2026 ranked Bengaluru 2nd among Asia’s AI-native startup clusters (after Beijing) and 15th globally among the top 40 startup ecosystems. The report cited India’s deep tech talent, government support through Start-Up India, and NASSCOM’s AI initiatives.

Meteorologists confirmed the return of El Niño conditions in 2026, with sea surface temperatures in the central/eastern Pacific exceeding normal by 0.5°C+. El Niño typically leads to below-normal monsoon rainfall in India, drought conditions in South Asia, and floods in South America.

Exam Tip: Distinguish El Niño (warming of Pacific), La Niña (cooling), and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Know their impact on India’s SW Monsoon, agriculture, and water security. IMD’s Long Range Forecast (LRF) and its reliability are tested in UPSC Geography and environment sections.

7. World Day Against Child Labour – June 12  [Social Issues]

June 12, 2026 marked the World Day Against Child Labour. The ILO reported approximately 160 million children globally are in child labour. India’s Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act 2016 bans employment of children under 14 in all occupations and those under 18 in hazardous industries.

Exam Tip: Know ILO conventions on child labour (No. 138 and No. 182), India’s Child and Adolescent Labour Act, National Child Labour Project (NCLP), and Article 24 (Constitution). UPSC GS-II Social Justice and SSC CGL GK covers this topic.
